IT without borders: Talent search makes companies recruit professionals from anywhere in the world

Even before the advent of remote work, some sectors of the Information Technology area were already experimenting working from home, a modality in which employees perform their business-related tasks at home, with no need to attend the company at all.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, what was previously pertinent to a small group has become commonplace in most corporations. After two years of Covid-19 limitations, most institutions have returned to the face-to-face mode; others implemented officially working from home, or remote work, for some positions; and some have chosen the hybrid work model, in which professionals work in person at the company on alternate days of the week.

However, with the urgency of creating digital solutions while improving and accelerating corporate processes, or even offering new products and services, companies endure a race against time in search of technological improvement, and one of the biggest challenges is hiring and retaining talents.

If it’s true there are vacancies in the IT industry, it’s also true there is a lack of professionals in it. That dilemma is experienced all over the world and, to meet the needs, in addition to remote work, companies are creating the movement called “Talent Without Borders”. That happens because, if in the past, disputes over a professional took place between corporations located in the same geographic territory, whether in the municipality, state, or country, limits no longer exist neither are considered determining factors for hiring currently.

We can see at the present time many technology professionals being hired by companies in other countries (for example, the United States or India), and performing their work remotely, without having to change their addresses or even having a permit or passport to do so. Certainly, you’ve heard about it or even seen a professional on a networking-oriented social media profile stating that he works remotely for a company located in India.

In a recent study, the North American consultancy Gartner reported that 58% of organizations in the world have at least one technology professional working remotely, that is, without borders. The survey also stated that 27% of leaders are researching more about this form of hiring lately.

“It is no surprise the borderless tech employee hiring rate has doubled over the last three years, as increasing employee retention and hiring has become a top priority for CEOs this year and 2023”, said Gabriela Vogel, Gartner Senior Director Analyst. “The Covid-19 pandemic has also accelerated borderless hiring, and what started as an exception is no longer one.”

The analysis was based on information from 288 C-level executives and their direct reports along the second quarter of this year. The goal was to understand the disposition and interest of organizations in hiring IT professionals without borders.

For Gartner analyst Gabriela Vogel, “in the professional world, location is fluid” and “the talent competition is agnostic, as everyone competes under the same flag: technology”. “There are no more limits of competition, and business and IT leaders hire employees without borders where they have the greatest competitive advantage – that’s what we call ‘borderless zone’,” she added.

According to the report, among companies that have talents without borders, 19% are in IT. “Hiring employees without borders requires business and IT leaders making significant adjustments to their operating model, including reviewing their management techniques, infrastructure and technology, cybersecurity, data protection and pay equity,” explained Vogel.

Ranking

In the study, India tops the list of countries that offer the most technology professionals without borders for companies in Europe and North America, followed by the United Kingdom and Germany.

Having labor laws favorable to work without borders, Europe concentrates most of the companies that hire that way. In the 10th place in the ranking of countries that offer talents without borders is Brazil, with 5% of the total number of professionals hired for the United States and 8% for Europe.
